Although most 6th graders complain about making their own lunches, more than 20 students from Mrs. Saunders' 6th grade class at St. John Catholic School in Jackson recently packed 1,320 lunch boxes for Catholic Charities of Jackson, Lenawee and Hillsdale Counties St. Patrick's Day Corned Box Lunch Benefit--and enjoyed every minute.
"The kids loved it, and wanted to stay all day," Mrs. Saunders said. "This is our 2nd year in a row of being of service to this organization!"
Each group of students worked with an adult volunteer, and divided the jobs - one group wrapped the corned beef and aged swiss sandwiches, another put mustard and horseradish in the boxes, and others placed pickles, cookies, coleslaw, silverware and chips.
"They truly shine when they are helping out one another," Mrs. Saunders said.
The students packed all but 320 of the 1,640 boxes needed.
The box lunches featured corned beef and aged swiss sandwiches and are sold for $7 each on the day before St. Patrick's Day. Proceeds benefitted Catholic Charities of Jackson, Lenawee and Hillsdale Counties.
